Harris was a World War I flyer and test pilot at McCook Field in Dayton during the early 1920s. He later became an executive with Pan American Airlines, American Overseas Airlines, and Northwest Airlines, as well as holding the rank of Colonel in the Army Air Transport Command during World War II.
